| How often do you think he got DiCaprio and Damon mixed up on set? |
A quick wrap-up of everything else I watched this week.
Can't Hardly Wait (1998) - I was too young for this when it came out and don't fully click with the humor or pathos of this graduation night party comedy, but Seth Green and Lauren Ambrose should have been A-List celebs immediately after this.
The Departed (2006) - I hadn't seen this since college. While I still find the cat-and-mouse story compelling, the editing and tone is so all over the place that I understand the pushback. Far from Scorsese's best, but it sure is swinging for the fences and having looked back at the competition ('06 wasn't the greatest of movie years) I get why the Academy chose to give Marty the Oscar.
The Great White Silence (1924) - This documentary about a tragic South Pole expedition has a surprisingly fun vacation slideshow vibe. There's a little too much footage of penguins, but this is right up there with Encounters at the End of the World (which has just the right amount of penguins) when it comes to great Antarctica docs.
Josh Johnson: Up Here Killing Myself (2023) - Combining a stand-up special with reenactments of his therapy sessions, Josh Johnson finds comedy gold in some dark places. It's quite good and it's streaming right now on Peacock.
Scream 4 (2011) - There's a Grindhouse (the Rodriguez/Tarantino project from 2007) influence on this one that just detracts from what had worked for the series up to this point. Felt unnecessary to come back, and I get why they waited 11 more years to try again.
Shrinking, Season 1 finale (2023) - I did not expect to fall in love with this show over the course of the season, but here we are. It carefully avoids some big sitcom cliches while allowing its characters to be vulnerable and grow in genuine ways. Harrison Ford and Jessica Williams remain the shows MVPs, but almost everyone is turning in career-best performances.
Tampopo (1985) - So weird and playful and horny for fine dining. It's a western about learning to cook the perfect ramen. What more could you want?
Trial By Fieri: Jalapeno and Lime, episode 1 (2023) - Last year Griffin McElroy started streaming a randomized, modded playthrough of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past where Link looked like Guy Fieri. It was brutal and hilarious, and now he's back at it with a similar playthrough of Ocarina of Time. Its release was tied to the yearly fundraiser for podcast network Maximum Fun, but hopefully it will continue. You can find the series on the McElroy Family YouTube page.
